5 Tips You Need To Know

1) Developing a strong brand means having a strategy coherently communicate your brand's personality. A well defined brand personality also helps you make clear cut decisions when facing a roadblock on your journey. Having a strong brand begins with understanding your brand archetype. From here you can begin to choose the right fonts, colors, words and even influencers that will lead you to have an easily recognizable and well structured brand. See the images above and below to discover which associations relate to your brand.

2) Discover the purpose behind your brand. This often is done by interviewing your audience or by introspecting about the vision. Always start with the assumption that no one cares, and find ways to provide real value and get the audiences attention. Questions for introspection could be:

1) Why does your brand exist?

2) What differentiates your brand?

3) What problem does your brand solve?

4) Why should people care?

3) Research your competitors and understand your unique selling proposition. Recognize what worked well for others and what key elements you may want to change in order to help you develop a great strategy. This research and implementation makes it much easier for you to build a company without your starting point having to be trying everything from scratch. It's important however to stay unique, but do question what are the other messages or visuals that similar companies convey? For example, I once worked for a company that was heavily inspired by Free People, can you tell?

4) Interview your users or potential users to build a buyer persona. You are not your users, and in order to resonate with people, you have to reflect them on some level and know how to communicate with them. Understand who are the people you want to look up to your brand and understand their motivations, goals, pain points, fears, desires, influencers and brand affinities. Then build a fictional character who's the sum of all these potential users and understand further how to connect with this individual.

5) Articulate a mission statement - This message should reflect you key values, personality and what you provide to your users. Make it short, not too limiting and don't be afraid to change it. This will help develop your brands voice further and help make difficult decisions down the line.
